Danish public operator DSB has expanded its order to Alstom with 50 additional IC5 electric trains, bringing the total fleet to 153 units.
This decision comes after a two-year delay in the original delivery schedule, which led Alstom to compensate DSB with three trains free of charge.
The contract, signed in 2021, now envisages the largest investment in rolling stock in Denmark’s history, exceeding 2.68 billion euros, although the exact cost of the new units remains confidential.

The IC5 trains, based on the Coradia Stream platform and adapted to Danish standards, will arrive in the Nordic country in 2025 to begin homologation. But they are not expected to enter commercial service until 2027.
They will progressively replace IC3 diesel trains, which will be phased out by 2030, in line with the total electrification of the rail network and the goal of phasing out diesel.
Alstom will be responsible for maintenance at two new workshops in Aarhus and Copenhagen. Apart from these Coradia Stream trains, DSB has invested in Siemens Vectron locomotives and Talgo 230 coaches to renew its fleet.
