The Spanish Council of Ministers has appointed Álvaro Fernández Heredia as president of Renfe this morning. The former Secretary General for Sustainable Mobility takes over from Raül Blanco, who announced his resignation on 7 January.
Álvaro Fernández Heredia, born in Madrid in 1980, is an expert in sustainable mobility. Civil Engineer and PhD in Transport Engineering and Planning from the UPM, he also holds a degree in Geography and History from the UNED.
With more than 20 years of experience, he has worked in research, teaching and consultancy. He was Managing Director of EMT in Madrid and Manager of AUVASA in Valladolid. He is currently Secretary General for Sustainable Mobility at the Ministry of Transport.

He is a member of international transport committees and he has received recognition for his work in sustainable urban mobility, including a special mention from the City of La Paz.
Fernández faces the challenge of recovering the quality and credibility of the Cercanías and Rodalies services, facing up to the competition and reaching Paris, as well as promoting the transformation of Renfe into a powerful company in the style of Aena.
His appointment marks the end of a period of less than two years in which Raül Blanco has sought to streamline the company’s management.
