An ICE test train of Deutsche Bahn and Siemens Mobility has reached 405 km/h on the Erfurt-Leipzig/Halle high-speed line on 28 June, thus reaching the German rail speed record.
The test, carried out with the ICE-S laboratory train (based on an ICE 2) equipped with a Velaro Novo experimental car, aimed to collect data on acoustics, aerodynamics, and behaviour at extreme speeds, essential for future train and infrastructure development.
Although this is the speed record for a Velaro in Germany, it falls short of the record for rail speed in the country. It is set at 406.9 km/h and was set on 1 May 1988 on the Hanover-Würzburg line with the ICE V experimental train.

DB stresses that these tests, which are only carried out on specially prepared sections and outside commercial service, confirm the capacity and excellent condition of the infrastructure after ten years of operation. According to Dr. Philipp Nagl, CEO of DB InfraGO AG, the success of the test demonstrates the value of long-term investments in German rail.
Velaro Novo, the new generation of high-speed trains from Siemens
The Velaro Novo is the latest generation of high-speed trains developed by Siemens, designed to operate at maximum speeds of between 250 and 360 km/h. It stands out, according to the manufacturer, for its energy efficiency, sustainability and flexibility.
Thanks to a lighter construction, it consumes 30% less energy than previous models, reduces weight by 15% and increases passenger space by 10%.
The interior is based on the empty tube concept, allowing full customisation according to the operator’s needs and facilitating future adaptations.
In addition, it incorporates sensors and advanced technology to optimise maintenance and reduce lifetime costs. Since 2018, Siemens has been testing the Velaro Novo in Germany in this special composition.
However, in recent orders for new trains, Deusche Bahn has opted for the Velaro Neo with some innovations of this new generation. The delay in the homologation of the Neo, which forms the 407 series, caused the German operator to go for the safe and quicker to put into service.
The first commercial outing for the Velaro Novo has been in the United States. Brightline West has acquired 10 7-car compositions of the American Pioneer, the version of this train adapted to American standards.
The Erfurt-Leipzig/Halle line was inaugurated in 2015 and remains a technological reference in Germany. It is currently undergoing maintenance work to ensure its reliability for years to come.
