Saarbrücken has taken an essential step in modernising its tram system. On Monday, 9 June, the city received the first CITYLINK tram train manufactured by Stadler Valencia.
This is the first delivery under the VDV TramTrain project, a consortium of six transport operators from Germany and Austria who signed a joint framework contract for up to 504 units, with a firm order for 246.
Saarbahn, the local operator, has ordered 28 units with an option for 21 more. The simplest units in the order can run on 750 Vdc and 15 kV 16.7 Hz electrified lines.

The CITYLINK is a train-tram designed and produced at Stadler’s Valencia plant. It is a modular, accessible, bi-directional vehicle that connects urban and peri-urban areas without transfers.
Each Saarbrücken unit is 37.2 m long and 2.65 m wide. It has air conditioning, multifunctional areas for bicycles and trolleys, and a capacity for 100 seats and up to 133 standing places.
The arrival of the first vehicle marks the start of an extensive testing and homologation process in Saarbrücken.
The aim is for the new trains to enter commercial service in the first half of 2026, progressively replacing the current fleet.
