Stadler and the Italian railway company Ferrovie Appulo Lucane (FAL) have unveiled Europe’s first fully battery-powered narrow-gauge electric train at the EXPO Ferroviaria in Milan.
It is a custom development for this project and is therefore not part of any manufacturer’s platform.
This 100% zero-emission train will reduceCO2 emissions by more than 1,300 tonnes per year, equivalent to 650 flights from Zurich to Thailand. The seven trains ordered by FAL will enter service on the Altamura-Matera line by the end of 2026 after passing their homologation.
The project, with a total investment of 63 million euros, is partially funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan and aims to decarbonise rail transport in the Basilicata region.
The trains, manufactured in Switzerland by Stadler, feature advanced battery technology that allows for significant range (the manufacturer does not specify how much) and short recharge times, as well as comfortable, accessible interiors made from recycled materials.
