Spain authorises the tender for the supply of electricity and diesel for railway use until 2030

.

The Spanish Council of Ministers gave the green light on Tuesday to tendering two large contracts for the energy supply of the railway sector, with a combined value exceeding €1.5 billion.

The first, managed by Adif AV, will enable the purchase of 100% renewable electricity with a guarantee of origin for train traction between 2026 and 2030, with an estimated budget of €1,334 million.

The choice of renewable energy reinforces the commitment to sustainability and the fight against climate change, allowing railway companies to manage price hedging and optimise their energy costs.

The second contract, for 160 million euros, authorises the purchase of diesel B — both exempt from excise duties and subsidised — for rail transport, with an estimated consumption of almost 90 million litres over two years.

Both contracts are in addition to others approved for the supply of green electricity to Adif facilities, for 88.4 million euros.
