The Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded the contract for drafting the studies of the Atlantic Axis section from O Porriño to the Portuguese border, in the province of Pontevedra. The winner is the joint venture formed by WSP SPAIN-APIA S.A.U. and MULTICRITERI – MCRIT A.I.E.

The contract, valued at €835,384 including VAT, requires the successful bidder to define the route that will connect the future southern exit of Vigo with the infrastructure being developed by Portugal south of the Miño River.

The work will be carried out in two phases: a feasibility study—including an analysis of alternatives, demand, and cost-benefit assessment—and an informative study, which will form the basis for public consultation and environmental evaluation.

The contract also includes engineering and consultancy services to manage consultations with authorities, analyse objections, and process the Environmental Impact Statement until the study receives final approval.

Thanks to the high-speed connection, travel time between Porto and Vigo will be just over an hour, halving the current train journey duration and considerably shorter than travel by road.

This project underscores the Ministry’s commitment to international rail connectivity. Furthermore, it marks a significant step towards the continuity of the high-speed Atlantic Axis to Lisbon, in line with the agreements reached by Spain and Portugal at the Hispano-Portuguese Summit held in Faro in 2024.
