The new Vitoria-Gasteiz station will begin developing its project this year after the presentation of a first expansion phase aimed at adapting the facilities to the future increase in demand.
The Secretary of State for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, José Antonio Santano, has stressed that the station will be essential for the high-speed and medium-distance train connection between the three Basque capitals and the Vitoria-Burgos-Madrid line.
The plan includes renovating the passenger building, which will have services and commercial spaces on two levels, and building a new building that will connect the current building with an enlarged lower level.
New platforms with canopies of more than 500 metres will be installed, and accessibility improvements will be made through stairs, lifts, and escalators.
In addition, a subway under the tracks and a large vestibule will improve the connection between the old town and the university campus, guaranteeing safety and comfort for users.
Santano announced the next meeting of the Vitoria Gasteizko Abiadura Handía High Speed Railway Company to discuss technical details and announced that the feasibility study of the Júndiz bypass, which will regulate the passage of freight, is about to be completed.
