The Spanish national operator Renfe will invest €1 billion between 2025 and 2030 to roll out its new Comprehensive Workshops and Maintenance Plan, which the Minister for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has described as “the largest investment in rail maintenance in its history.”

Puente announced the plan during a visit to the new high-speed depot at Fuencarral II in Madrid, a facility with a budget of nearly €100 million and covering 18,900 m2. It is expected to come into service before the end of the year. The site will double its capacity for servicing standard-gauge trains.

The plan foresees more than 60 interventions nationwide, including new Cercanías (commuter) rail depots in Aranjuez, Móstoles–El Soto and Fuencarral; expansions on the Rodalies network; and new bases for high-speed and freight operations in locations such as Murcia, Málaga, Santander and Valencia.

Renfe will implement a more advanced maintenance model featuring real-time condition monitoring and fully digitised processes, reducing time out of service in workshops by 29%. These changes aim to boost train availability, improve punctuality and deliver a more efficient service to passengers.
