Renfe announces its financial results for 2024 with figures that significantly improve on those of the previous year. With a net loss of € 2.9 million (compared to € 121.5 million in 2023), the group is close to breaking even, boosted by the increase in passenger demand.
Last year, the public operator carried more than 535 million passengers and achieved an operating profit (EBIT) of 68.6 million euros, compared to a loss of 83.3 million euros in 2023.
The boost came mainly from AVE and Larga Distancia services, which increased their users by 14.4% and generated 1,366 million in revenue. In total, the group had a turnover of 1,923.6 million, representing a 5.3% increase over the previous year.
The company reduced its net loss to 2.9 million, thanks to business growth and international consolidation, with operations such as the Haramain in Saudi Arabia and the Tren Maya in Mexico bringing in 87 million.
Cercanías and Media Distancia recorded a slight drop in revenue due to free season tickets and works, although they gained recurrent passengers. Renfe reinforced its commitment to innovation and sustainability, installing 20,000 solar panels and reducing its carbon footprint by 88.7% since 2005.
During the first half of 2025, the results have worsened with a net loss of 81.8 million euros due to the ballast of Renfe Mercancías.
