London’s Docklands Light Railway (DLR) has unveiled the first of its 54 new B23 stock trains, manufactured in Spain by CAF.

The commissioning of the first unit marks the start of a refurbishment aimed at completely modernising the network by the end of 2026. The investment, backed by the UK government and the National Wealth Fund, will increase service capacity by more than 50%.

The first order for the new series was placed in 2019, when TfL (Transport for London) ordered 43 5-car compositions. In July 2023, the order was extended by 11 units, totalling €950 million.

The new trains have open-plan interiors that offer 10% more space. They offer air conditioning, charging points for mobile devices and real-time information systems. They also incorporate areas for bicycles, trolleys and luggage, as well as spaces reserved for wheelchair users.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, stressed that the arrival of the new fleet will be key to supporting the urban and economic growth of areas such as Stratford, Woolwich Arsenal, and the Isle of Dogs. Here, the DLR serves as an essential link.

The project, valued at more than £760 million, is also financially supported by London City Airport, which contributed more than £5 million to reinforce the commitment to sustainable transport and improve the passenger experience.
