The Huesca-Canfranc railway will reopen to commercial traffic next Monday, June 9th, after almost two years of closure due to the works to completely renew 81 kilometres of track between Ayerbe-Caldearenas and Jaca-Canfranc.
The return of the ‘Canfranero’ will reduce journey times by up to 30 minutes, thanks to an investment of 200 million euros that has modernised the infrastructure and improved safety and comfort for passengers. Even so, the journey time will be half an hour longer than that of the Alternative Transport Plan.
Renewing the track on the unreformed sections will facilitate the recovery of international traffic when France reopens the Bedous-Canfranc section. The Spanish section will be prepared for a future gauge migration.
Although workers were initially told that the reopening would occur on 31 May, Adif has postponed the date to carry out a week of tests without passengers. The commercial service will resume on 9 June, with new timetables already available in all information and sales channels.
During the closure, which began on 19 June 2023, buses covered the route between Huesca and Canfranc. Now, the line is recovering its railway operation.
