Dutch rail blackout leaves Schiphol airport without trains

.

A catenary blackout complicates mobility in the Netherlands at the start of the NATO summit in The Hague. Rail traffic is suspended between Schiphol airport (the country’s main airport), Amsterdam and Utrecht until at least 23:00 on Tuesday.

According to ProRail, the Dutch infrastructure manager, the cause of the power failure was a fire in some cables that broke out at 3:45. However, no further details have been provided, and the fire’s origin is unknown.

ProRail has reported that the repair will continue for most of the day. Although rail traffic from Leiden to Schiphol has been restored, no trains are running between the airport and Amsterdam and Utrecht, nor between Schiphol and Duivendrecht.

The situation is aggravated by planned road closures in the Randstad region for security reasons related to the summit, which will make access to the airport even more difficult.

NS, the state rail operator, has advised commuters to seek alternatives such as the metro between Amsterdam Sloterdijk, Lelylaan, Zuid and Duivendrecht, as replacement buses will not be deployed due to the extent of the breakdown.

The outage also affects lines between Rotterdam, Breda, Leiden, and The Hague, resulting in fewer trains and delays of up to 15 minutes.
