French logistics group CMA CGM, owner of Continental Rail, has announced the acquisition of Freightliner UK Intermodal Logistics. The deal, which is pending regulatory approval and is expected to be completed in 2026, consolidates the shipping company as a major player in the UK rail sector.

The deal covers both the rail and road activities, as well as the inland terminals and the Freightliner brand. The deal excludes the Heavy Haul, Rotterdam Rail Feeding and Freightliner divisions in Poland/Germany, which will remain under their current ownership.

The company will continue to operate independently, maintaining its multi-user, multi-client model, while benefiting from CMA CGM’s global coverage and support in logistics and shipping.

The acquisition, scheduled for completion in early 2026, is in line with the group’s commitment to encourage a modal shift from road to rail, which is key to the decarbonisation of European logistics chains. CMA CGM transported more than 200,000 TEUs this year in the UK by rail and road.

The integration will enhance connectivity between UK ports and the hinterland, offering integrated and sustainable logistics solutions that combine maritime and rail expertise. Rodolphe Saadé, chairman of CMA CGM, underlined that this acquisition represents a decisive step towards expanding lower carbon footprint transport options and strengthening the group’s position in the UK market.
