The Madrid Cercanías network has closed September with a notable growth in the number of users compared to the same month in 2024. It has even surpassed the number of passengers in September 2019, before the pandemic.
According to the Minister for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, a total of 21.4 million users used the Cercanías service in the capital this month. This is 8.5% more than in September 2024, when the number of passengers was close to 20 million.
This improvement comes even though this is the first school month after the end of free travel cards. According to the communiqué, the works on line 6 of the Madrid metro and the burying of the A-5 have led to the use of Cercanías as an alternative.

This increase in passengers contrasts with Renfe’ s decision to cut the service on the C-5 between 6 and 16 September. From the second fortnight the usual timetables have been restored, with frequencies of one train every 5 minutes in the morning rush hour and 7 minutes at midday and in the afternoon.
