BVG, Berlin’s local transport company, today put the first of the German capital’s new metro trains into operation on the U2 line.
This is the JK series, the first addition to the Berlin metro fleet in ten years on the narrow gauge lines (U1 to U4).
Manufactured by Stadler, plans are to add up to 140 new cars by the end of the year, replacing the older 1960 A3 and 1974 G series.
This project is part of BVG’s “stability before growth” strategy, which aims to achieve 99% service reliability in the coming years.
The new trains are characterised by greater reliability, spacious interior design, modern information systems and improved accessibility, which means more space and comfort for the Berlin underground.
In the long term, the agreement with Stadler envisages the delivery of up to 1,500 cars by 2035, worth up to 3 billion euros. The wider J-series, for lines U5 to U9, is in the testing phase and will enter service next summer.
The current renovation represents the largest acquisition in the history of the BVG and a key commitment to sustainable mobility in Berlin.
