Work has been completed on the Chamartín underground central concourse for the Iberian gauge tracks (1 to 13). Yesterday, the extension to platform 8 (tracks 12 and 13), which until now were only connected above ground, came into service.
After the upper concourse was closed, a pedestrian walkway linking platforms 7 and 8 was necessary to reach them.
Like the other platforms, Platform 8 is connected to this subway by stairs, escalators and lifts. In addition, in the future, it will be possible to reach this area from the high-speed tracks.

Thanks to this commissioning, the last phase of the extension of the main concourse can be put into operation. With the restoration of through traffic on tracks 11 and 12, the southern end of tracks 9 and 10 can be cut to work on them.
The station, which handled 44.4 million passengers in 2024—almost 26 million of them Cercanías users—is continuing its transformation with an investment of over 540 million euros.
The passenger building will double its initial surface area to 18,000 m², organised into three regions: boarding for Cercanías, Alta Velocidad and a large central corridor 18 metres wide and 220 metres long, with commercial premises and waiting areas.
