A minor dies after being electrocuted by the overhead wire at Araia station

.

A 17-year-old girl died this Monday afternoon at Araia station, in Álava, after suffering an electric shock when she accidentally came into contact with the catenary.

Initial indications from the Basque Government’s Department of Security indicate that the young woman was the victim of an “electric shock” while trying to get into a wagon parked on track 4, together with another girl of a similar age.

The incident occurred around 14:00, when the SOS Deiak service received the emergency call. Ertzaintza patrols, firefighters and medical staff were quickly on the scene.

Despite resuscitation manoeuvres performed on the victim, it was not possible to save her life. The companion of the deceased was injured and had to be taken to a nearby hospital.

Following the accident, the power supply to the railway network was disconnected, causing considerable delays to Renfe trains running in the Basque area. The Ertzaintza has opened an investigation to clarify the facts.

Rest in peace.
