Spain will increase the capacity of the Malaga C-1 by 60%

The Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has unveiled a strategy to enhance the C1 commuter train line in Malaga. This initiative will result in a 60% increase in capacity and a reduction in the frequency of trains from 20 to 15 minutes, which will be advantageous to over 14 million annual users.

The Secretary General for Sustainable Mobility, Sara Hernández, explained that the first phase of the functional study has concluded with several immediate actions:

• The adaptation of five stations (Los Boliches, Carvajal, El Pinillo, Plaza Mayor and Centro Alameda) for 100-metre trains.
• The extension of platforms at Benalmádena station to 200 metres.
• The doubling of the track between the airport and Campamento Benítez.

In the second phase, which is currently being drafted, the doubling of tracks on the Torremolinos – El Pinillo and Benalmádena – Campo de Golf sections is being studied, which is essential to reduce the frequency to 15 minutes. In addition, the control, command, and signalling installations are being renovated to modernise the service.

These improvements are part of a comprehensive plan that also supports the development of the Costa del Sol Train, whose feasibility study is being addressed in a global manner, seeking to decongest the A-7 and optimise mobility in the province.
