The first trains destined for Madrid Metro’s Line 6 — the city’s inaugural fleet of fully automatic trains — are scheduled to begin test runs from July 2026. This marks the final step before they enter into passenger service, expected in 2027.

The new batch, whose numbering has yet to be assigned, will comprise 48 trainsets. The initial order for 40 units was awarded in 2024, and the contract was expanded in August this year with eight additional sets.

Construction is currently underway at CAF’s plants in Beasain and Zaragoza. Factory trials are slated to begin in February, with the first deliveries to Madrid scheduled for July, when the new rolling stock will enter track testing on Lines 10 and 11 during night-time engineering hours.

Before passenger service can commence on Line 6, platform screen doors must be installed — a project for which there are still no updates.

These new units will offer performance levels similar to the existing 8000-2nd series trains currently operating on Line 6, but with higher capacity and state-of-the-art passenger information systems. They will be single-voltage (1,500 V DC), as ongoing modernisation works on the line include converting the traction voltage.
