The Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded a contract worth 534,031 euros to draft the informative study to connect the Córdoba–Jaén corridor with the Madrid–Seville high-speed line.
The scheme, with an estimated investment of 400 million euros, aims to bring Jaén closer to the high-speed network, trimming more than 50 minutes off the current travel time to Madrid. Once completed, both cities will be linked in three hours, around half an hour less than by road.
The connection will be made through a new bypass linking the high-speed line to Line 400 Alcázar de San Juan–Cádiz at Córdoba, thus avoiding the need for passengers to change trains in the city. Tendered last July, this initiative replaces an earlier proposal to build a new high-speed route branching off the Madrid–Seville line at Mora (Toledo) and continuing to Alcázar de San Juan.

The project forms part of a broader strategy for sustainable mobility aimed at enhancing territorial cohesion and reducing reliance on private vehicles. A prior feasibility study gave a favourable socioeconomic assessment and outlined several route alternatives.
The Ministry is also advancing other railway undertakings in Jaén, such as the improvement of rail integration in the city centre and works connected to the rolling highway scheme.
