Indra has landed one of the biggest contracts in its history after being chosen by Transport for London (TfL) to operate, maintain and further develop the fare collection and access control system for all public transport in London and its metropolitan area until 2034.
The agreement, worth £524 million (around €605 million) and extendable to £845 million (€975 million), includes possible extensions until 2039.
TfL selected Indra last October, although the decision was challenged by the current incumbent, Cubic. However, the award has now been upheld.

As a result, the Spanish company will become TfL’s strategic technology partner, managing a system that handles more than 8.6 million journeys per day across a network of over 8,500 buses, 400 Underground stations and 300 additional services.
The project covers the maintenance and modernisation of thousands of ticket gates, validators, ticket machines, top-up terminals and the sophisticated back-office system. It will also enhance cybersecurity and support the rollout of new technologies — including the forthcoming Account-Based Ticketing (ABT) system for the Oyster card.
With this contract, Indra strengthens its position among the world’s top three providers of urban transport solutions and boosts its footprint in the UK, in line with its “Leading the Future” strategic plan.
