Adif Alta Velocidad has brought into service a further 2,112 m² of the main concourse at Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor, an extension that restores the station building’s principal entrance for passengers. The former open-air forecourt is now sheltered by a large glass vault that protects users from bad weather while improving the perception of the station’s main façade.

With this phase, the concourse now totals 6,712 m², up from the previous 4,600 m², and incorporates new food and beverage units, toilets, 400 seats, ticket vending machines, device charging points and 36 LED screens providing real-time information. The new 1,325 m² exterior canopy is formed by seven pairs of arches and laminated glazing, creating a continuous covered space between the public realm and the high-speed concourse.

Adif AV is thus pressing ahead with the full remodelling of the hub, which will allow the high-speed train capacity to be doubled and will increase the areas available to passengers. This is done with a phased works schedule designed to maintain rail operations at all times. The programme, backed by an investment of 557 million euros, also includes the ongoing reconfiguration of the station forecourt and surrounding roads to improve both pedestrian flows and road traffic.

In parallel, work continues reorganising access roads and interchange areas to streamline drop-off, taxis and urban traffic, reinforcing Chamartín’s role as a key high-speed and commuter rail node for northern Madrid. Assistance services for passengers with reduced mobility are already operating from their final location within the main concourse, improving wayfinding and shortening transfer routes between services.
