The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has initiated the procedure to rename Cordoba’s railway station as “Estación de Córdoba-Julio Anguita”, in tribute to the first democratic mayor of the city between 1979 and 1986, coinciding with the fifth anniversary of his death.
The decision responds to the City Council’s request in February 2024. It seeks to highlight Julio Anguita’s contribution to the development of Cordoba and Spanish democracy. The process is carried out in accordance with Order TRM/957/2024 of 6 September, which regulates the changes of name in railway infrastructures.
The necessary reports from the infrastructure manager and the station operators are currently being sought. Subsequently, a fifteen-day hearing period will be opened for the Andalusian Regional Government and Cordoba City Council. The final decision, to be taken by the Secretary of State for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, is expected to be adopted next June.
Rail News Vista believes that this change is a mistake. Stations should be easily identifiable, with the shortest possible name. This change does not benefit anyone and, apart from being an expense, will generate confusion. There are better places to honour people.
